A 17-year-old suspect led deputies on a short chase Tuesday that ended in a multi-vehicle crash, leaving several drivers with minor injuries, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. The incident took place in the Savannah area, where authorities temporarily closed nearby roads while deputies secured and investigated the scene.
How Deputies Spotted the Vehicle
Deputies first noticed the vehicle earlier that day at an intersection in Liberty County after the driver ran a stop sign, which raised suspicion. A deputy began following the car and monitored its movement without activating lights or sirens at first. After the driver committed additional traffic violations, the deputy turned on emergency lights and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
Chase Began After Vehicle Identified as Stolen
During the situation, deputies confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen. Authorities later stated that the car belonged to the suspect’s mother, which escalated the situation and led to a brief police pursuit.
Crash Near Busy Intersection
The chase ended near the intersection of Victory Drive and Montgomery Street, close to a McDonald’s, where the suspect crashed into multiple vehicles. Several drivers sustained minor injuries, and emergency teams treated them at the scene. Officials confirmed that no pedestrians were injured during the crash.
Suspect Attempted to Flee
Authorities identified the suspect as Jebree Murphy, 17. After the crash, Murphy attempted to flee on foot, but deputies quickly chased him down and took him into custody. They transported him to a local hospital for evaluation before placing him under arrest.
Charges and Legal Action
Sheriff Coleman confirmed that Murphy will face charges as an adult and may face several serious traffic-related offenses, including possible felony charges. Officials stated that the charges are connected to the pursuit, the stolen vehicle, and the crash, although they have not released the full list yet.
Road Closures and Investigation
Deputies closed nearby roads for about one hour while they documented the scene and cleared damaged vehicles. Authorities reopened the roads after confirming that the area was safe.
Ongoing Investigation
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident and urges anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office. Witnesses can help provide additional details about what happened.
Safety Reminder from Officials
Officials emphasized that police pursuits carry serious risks and stated that officers carefully evaluate each situation to protect public safety. The incident highlights the dangers of reckless driving and fleeing from law enforcement.
