Early-Morning Crashes Prompt Bridge Closures

On Wednesday morning, traffic on key bridges in South Carolina’s Lowcountry area was severely disrupted after a series of reported crashes and slick, icy road conditions. The closures affected the Don Holt Bridge and Cosgrove Bridge, with authorities shutting them down in the early hours as multiple accidents piled up on slippery road surfaces, the type of hazardous roadway situation that personal injury lawyers often examine when weather-related crashes lead to injuries and complex liability questions.

According to dispatch records, the initial collisions occurred between 4:35 a.m. and 5:10 a.m. on a stretch between Virginia Avenue and Clements Ferry Road. That was only the start more crashes were reported as the morning went on, leading to full closure of the eastbound lanes and major traffic backup.

Hazardous Conditions ,Ice and Fog Reported

Weather and road-safety officials say moisture on the bridge surfaces likely froze overnight, creating dangerously slick conditions. A meteorologist involved in the coverage noted that these icy patches ,probably combined with areas of fog ,caused reduced visibility and significantly increased the risk of accidents.

Local law-enforcement agencies warned drivers to avoid travel over the closed bridges if possible. For those needing alternate routes, the authorities recommended using the Ravenel Bridge when heading toward Daniel Island or Mount Pleasant ,or delaying travel until conditions improved.

Reopening After Hours of Disruption

Traffic began returning to normal later in the morning. The Don Holt Bridge reopened around 9:41 a.m., followed by Cosgrove Bridge shortly after 10:00 a.m. However, as of reopening, one section ,the Northbridge on Cosgrove Avenue ,remained closed, suggesting that cleanup and safety checks were still ongoing at last update.

Authorities have not yet released full details on injuries or the total number of vehicles involved in the crashes. Initial reports confirm that some accidents resulted in injuries, but specifics remain pending as investigations continue.

What Drivers Are Being Told

Police and traffic officials urged motorists to slow down and drive cautiously given the potential for lingering icy patches and unpredictable conditions, particularly on elevated roadways like bridges. Drivers were also advised to avoid the affected bridges where possible and to use alternate routes until conditions are declared safe.

For many Lowcountry commuters, what began as a routine morning drive turned into a lengthy detour ,a sharp reminder of how quickly weather and road conditions can escalate into dangerous situations.
