A three-vehicle crash caused significant traffic delays Tuesday morning along Interstate 575 southbound in Cherokee County, impacting commuters in the Holly Springs area during the busy morning rush. The incident occurred on the first day back to school following winter break, adding to congestion for drivers heading toward metro Atlanta.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the vehicle crash was reported just before 8 a.m. near Holly Springs. Traffic cameras operated by GDOT showed the crash blocking both through lanes of I-575 southbound approximately one mile before the Sixes Road exit, also known as Exit 11.
The blockage quickly led to slow-moving traffic and backups as motorists approached the area. Drivers were advised to expect delays and to use caution while traveling through the corridor.
Traffic conditions were monitored closely by local traffic officials and media throughout the morning. 11Alive Traffic Anchor Rachel Cox-Rosen confirmed the lane blockage after spotting the crash on a GDOT traffic camera. The footage showed emergency response activity and vehicles stopped across the southbound lanes.
The crash happened during a critical time for commuters, as many students and workers were returning to regular schedules following the winter holiday break. As a result, traffic volume was higher than usual, amplifying the impact of the lane closures.
Emergency responders and traffic crews worked at the scene to manage traffic flow and clear the roadway. Vehicles involved in the crash were removed from the lanes, allowing crews to reopen the interstate.
By approximately 8:40 a.m., GDOT confirmed that all lanes of I-575 southbound had reopened to traffic. While traffic conditions gradually improved after the lanes were cleared, residual delays continued for a short time as congestion eased.
Authorities have not released information regarding injuries related to the crash. It is also unclear what caused the rear end collision or whether any citations were issued. Officials stated that further details may be provided if additional information becomes available.
Motorists traveling through Cherokee County were reminded to remain alert, especially during peak commute hours. Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining safe following distances and staying attentive to traffic conditions to reduce the risk of multi-vehicle crashes.
Drivers were encouraged to stay informed by checking traffic updates before heading out and to consider alternate routes when delays occur on major highways.
Traffic officials continue to monitor conditions along I-575 and other major routes as schools resume and traffic volumes increase across the region.
